Spain has reported a rise in mortality rates due to the heat
The extreme heat that swept across Spain in late June may have caused at least 212 deaths in just four days.
According to experts, the 212 deaths recorded between June 21 and 24 may be directly linked to the abnormally high temperatures that persisted in the country for several days.
Amid the dangerous heatwave, a red alert was issued in France, Spain, and a number of other countries in Western and Central Europe.
Statistics show that in 2025, Spain recorded 3,832 deaths indirectly linked to extreme heat. This figure covers the period from May 14 to September 30 and was the second-highest on record.
The worst year remains 2022, when 4,789 people died due to excessive heat.
In total, 27,564 people died in Spain from the effects of abnormally high temperatures between 2015 and 2025.
Experts emphasize that the risk of heat-related mortality increases by approximately 9–10% with every additional degree of temperature above the climatic norm.
The most vulnerable to high temperatures remain the elderly, people with chronic illnesses, and those with cardiovascular and respiratory problems.
Experts warn that heat waves are becoming increasingly frequent and intense, posing serious risks to the healthcare systems and populations of European countries.
These figures were released by the Carlos III Health Institute in Madrid, according to AFP.
In Italy, five people have died over the past day due to extreme heat, and temperatures in many regions of the country have reached +41°C.
The abnormal heat in Europe has led to at least 18 deaths.
France has faced power outages amid a record-breaking heat wave that has swept across much of Western Europe. Several regions have reported power outages, as well as the imposition of emergency restrictions and the temporary closure of educational institutions.
