In Italy, five people have died over the past 24 hours amid extreme heat, with temperatures reaching +41°C in many regions of the country.
Among the victims were a vineyard worker, a laborer repairing water infrastructure, a man who fell ill at a cemetery, a homeless person in Naples, and a worker who died while working in a field near Milan.
Due to the high temperatures, an overloaded power grid caused power outages in a number of cities. In particular, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence temporarily limited the number of visitors due to problems with its air conditioning systems.
Currently, the highest heat hazard level has been declared in 18 cities across Italy. In several regions, authorities have banned construction workers and couriers from working outdoors during the hottest hours of the day, while labor unions have called on the government to compensate workers for lost income due to forced work stoppages.
The abnormal heatwave in Europe has claimed at least 18 lives.
France has faced power outages amid a record-breaking heat wave that has swept across much of Western Europe. Several regions have reported power outages, as well as the imposition of emergency restrictions and the temporary closure of educational institutions.
