In Italy, garbage collectors found a lottery ticket worth over $1 million that a woman had thrown away
In Italy, municipal workers helped a local resident recover a lottery ticket worth 1 million euros (about $1.15 million) that she had accidentally thrown away after misinterpreting a message while checking the results.
According to GamblingNews, the incident occurred in the city of Bitonto. The woman scanned the ticket herself at a retail location, after which the message “non pagabile” (“not payable”) appeared on the screen. She mistakenly assumed this meant she had lost, and threw the ticket in the trash.
Later, her relatives noticed that the combination of numbers on the ticket matched the winning numbers exactly. By the time the woman returned to the trash container, the trash had already been hauled away.
She then contacted the local waste management company, SANB. Its employees tracked where the waste from that route had been taken and manually sorted through the trash. As a result, they were able to find the ticket and return it to its owner.
Now the woman will be able to claim her prize of 1 million euros. According to local media, the story has become one of the most talked-about in Italy, and the sanitation workers are being hailed as heroes of the day. At the same time, lottery organizers urged players to carefully check the results and not to rush to throw away tickets if they have any doubts about their status.
