In Israel, prosecutors appeal Uri Alfi’s 17-year sentence
In Israel, prosecutors have appealed the 17-year prison sentence imposed on Uri Alfi. According to the Jerusalem Post, the prosecution is asking the Supreme Court to substantially increase the punishment, considering the current sentence insufficient in light of the number of incidents and victims, as well as the danger he allegedly poses.
Case circumstances
According to the publication, Alfi spent about a year using fake accounts and invented online identities while posing as a woman. Using technological means, he made this image more convincing, established contact with dozens of men through sexualized correspondence, and induced them to commit and record sexual acts.
In several cases, Alfi contacted parents of young children and, according to case materials, instructed them to sexually abuse the children and send him live video or recordings. In other incidents, he tried to induce parents to commit further crimes. The Jerusalem Post also reported that he threatened one of the men with exposure in order to force him to continue.
Alfi was found guilty on 11 counts, including causing and attempting to cause rape and indecent acts against minors within families, extortion by threats, possession of child sexual abuse material, and using minors to produce such material.

Arguments of the appeal
On July 12, the Central District Court in Lod sentenced Alfi to 17 years in prison, suspended sentences, and compensation totaling 200,000 Israeli shekels. The funds are to be distributed among 10 identified victims. The court noted that the online nature of the crimes does not lessen their severity and that Alfi was the driving force behind the abuse, although the acts were physically committed by the parents, who also bear their own responsibility.
Prosecutors are challenging the way the court combined punishments for different incidents. The minimum terms for individual counts would have totaled 27 years, but the court set an overall range of 17 to 22 years and imposed the minimum term within that range. The state is not demanding that all terms be served consecutively, but believes the sentence did not sufficiently account for the separate crimes and different victims.
The appeal concerns only the sentence, not the conviction. The conviction followed Alfi’s admission of the facts set out in an amended indictment as part of a plea agreement. The prosecution also argues that the court placed excessive weight on a private expert’s opinion regarding Alfi’s potential for rehabilitation, although he refused an assessment by the state probation service.
