An environmental activist in London faces an investigation after cleaning up trash from a river
In the United Kingdom, lawyer and environmental activist Paul Powelsland faces the possibility of an investigation after he and a group of volunteers cleaned up the Alders Brook in London on their own.
Despite the improvement in the river’s environmental condition, officials are investigating whether environmental regulations were violated during the cleanup.
Powelsland and ten like-minded individuals spent 10 days clearing the river of accumulated trash. During that time, the activists pulled nearly 200 large bags of waste from the river, including syringes, household appliances, plastic, packaging, and even weapons.
The team used an excavator to carry out the work, which was one of the reasons it drew the attention of government agencies.
After the cleanup was completed, the UK Environment Agency notified the activist that an investigation had been launched. Officials believe that the cleanup may have involved work requiring a special license, as well as permits for waste disposal.
In addition, officials suggest that the intervention may have involved dredging, which is regulated by specific environmental standards.
Powelsland himself is convinced that the problem lies not in the volunteers’ actions, but in the long-standing inaction of the responsible authorities.
According to him, he has repeatedly appealed to the authorities to remove the trash and eliminate the sources of pollution, but due to bureaucratic procedures, the issue remained unresolved.
The Guardian noted that no official proceedings have been opened against the activist at this time. The agency is merely conducting an investigation together with environmental and municipal experts to establish all the facts.
After the river was cleaned up, local residents reported a noticeable improvement in the water body’s ecological condition. According to them, birds and other members of the local fauna have already begun returning to the area.
The activists state that they intend to continue cleaning up Alders Brook and its tributaries and, if necessary, are prepared to defend their position in court.

Earlier, a group of environmental activists from Greenpeace staged a protest at the exclusive Trump Turnberry golf resort in Scotland. The activists spoke out in support of renewable energy sources, expressing their opposition to Donald Trump’s plans to increase fossil fuel production.
Additionally, Ukraine and the International Atomic Energy Agency are drafting a document on cooperation in post-war reconstruction and the development of nuclear energy. The project provides for technical support for the construction of new nuclear power plants, the introduction of small modular reactors, and the modernization of equipment.
