Hungary has developed AI to investigate abuses during the Orbán era — Financial Times

The Hungarian Anti-Corruption Authority has developed an AI-based system designed to track the movement of funds that may have been embezzled during the 16-year tenure of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The new tool is designed to analyze financial flows and identify potential corruption schemes as part of large-scale investigations.

The head of the Hungarian Integrity Authority told reporters that his team had created a “modern anti-corruption agency” using artificial intelligence.

“We have created a modern anti-corruption agency using artificial intelligence and machine learning integrated into a system capable of tracking Hungary’s economic transactions in real time,” he said.

Biro said that the new government led by Péter Magyar aims to recover as quickly as possible, an estimated 160 billion euros in public funds that may have been improperly distributed among associates of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

“This is the moment we’ve been waiting for,” he said.

According to Biro, the Orbán government refused to cooperate with this agency, which severely limited its effectiveness. His agency expects to step up its work now that Magyar took office last month.

“I think very large sums could be repatriated. The country desperately needs the stolen funds, and most of this money is currently abroad,” he said, according to the Financial Times.

As a reminder, Madyar is ready to meet with Zelenskyy next week, but there is a condition.

The foreign ministers of Ukraine and Hungary, Andriy Sibiga and Anita Orbán, held their first in-person meeting on May 22. During the talks in Helsingborg, the parties agreed to hold a second round of expert-level consultations next week to further discuss bilateral issues.

Earlier, the Hungarian government commented on the massive attack by Russian drones on Zakarpattia, during which the region’s critical infrastructure was struck. Budapest described the situation in the border region as extremely alarming and announced that it was preparing urgent countermeasures.
