The Venice Commission will examine the legality of the attempt to remove the Hungarian president

The Venice Commission will visit Hungary this week to assess the proposed constitutional reform, which provides for the early termination of President Tamás Szujók’s term of office.

The bill was initiated by the government of Prime Minister Péter Magyar. The document stipulates that the president will lose his office the day after the relevant constitutional amendment takes effect, even though his term was supposed to last until 2029.

Sújók himself called the attempt to remove him unlawful and referred the matter to the Venice Commission for review. Experts are expected to review the bill under an expedited procedure.

The Venice Commission is an advisory body of the Council of Europe that assesses whether constitutional changes comply with European standards of democracy and the rule of law. Its conclusions are of a recommendatory nature.

The foreign ministers of Ukraine and Hungary, Andriy Sibiga and Anita Orbán, held their first in-person meeting on May 22. During the talks in Helsingborg, the parties agreed to hold a second round of expert-level consultations next week to further discuss bilateral issues.

Earlier, the Hungarian government commented on the massive attack by Russian drones on Zakarpattia, during which the region’s critical infrastructure was targeted. Budapest described the situation in the border region as extremely alarming and announced that it was preparing urgent countermeasures.
