Venezuela’s Acting President, Delcy Rodríguez, stated that the death toll from the country’s two devastating earthquakes has risen to 589, and the number of injured has reached at least 2,980.

The massive natural disaster has caused significant damage to civilian infrastructure and residential areas.

A large-scale international rescue operation is currently underway at the site of the tragedy.

International observers and journalists are noting certain discrepancies in the official reports from Venezuelan government officials regarding the total number of victims.

In particular, there is a puzzling discrepancy in the data on the number of injured: yesterday, Venezuelan Health Minister Carlos Alvarado told the state-run television channel VTV that there were more than 4,300 injured.

The exact reasons for this discrepancy in official reports remain unknown at this time.

The coastal region of La Guaira, north of Caracas, was hardest hit by the two earthquakes that struck on Wednesday and has been declared a “disaster zone.”

The province’s social and public infrastructure suffered massive damage due to the tremors. According to official UN data, at least 100 buildings collapsed there, including high-rise residential buildings.

This was reported by The Guardian.
