Ghana’s technical university lecturers warn of possible strike over unpaid allowances
The Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG) has warned of a possible strike over delays in the payment of book and research allowances for the 2025/2026 academic year. Members of the association may stop work if the government does not make the payments by September 22, 2026.
Seven days for payments
As MyJoyOnline reports, TUTAG has given the government seven days from the date of the publication of its statement to allocate and disburse the funds. The communiqué was signed by the association’s national president, Professor Deodat Emilson Adenutsi.
The association stated that systematic delays effectively negate the purpose of this allowance. According to TUTAG, the funds should be provided at the beginning of the academic year, when lecturers plan teaching, conduct research, purchase academic materials, participate in scholarly events, and prepare manuscripts for publication.

Purpose of the allowance
According to the association, the payments are intended to support lecturers in conducting large-scale research, preparing publications, purchasing academic materials, and pursuing professional development. TUTAG noted that the academic year for which the allowance was intended has already ended at most institutions, while lecturers have often paid for the relevant activities from their own funds.
The association appealed to the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and other state institutions to immediately pay the allowance to all eligible members. TUTAG also stated that it had repeatedly discussed the issue with stakeholders during dialogue and consultations.
