U.S. Vice President Heads to Hungary to Show Support for Orbán — Reuters
U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance began an official visit to Hungary on Tuesday, April 7, with the aim of publicly supporting Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s election campaign.
Reuters reports this.
The trip comes ahead of Hungary’s critical parliamentary elections, scheduled for April 12.
During the two-day visit, the U.S. official will hold a series of meetings with the Hungarian leader and speak at a joint campaign rally.
This move demonstrates the strengthening of the political alliance between the current U.S. administration and the current Hungarian government.
“I look forward to meeting with my good friend Viktor, and we will discuss a range of issues related to U.S.-Hungarian relations,” the U.S. Vice President told reporters just before departure.
In addition to Hungary’s domestic political issues, the parties plan to address global challenges affecting the region’s stability. In particular, the agenda includes a discussion of the future strategy regarding Europe and the situation in Ukraine.
The U.S. Vice President also emphasized that his personal friendship with Orbán contributes to a better understanding of both countries’ positions within NATO.
The visit is expected to energize the electorate of Hungary’s center-right forces ahead of the vote.
Representatives of the Hungarian government confirmed that the visit’s schedule is extremely packed and includes both closed-door talks and public events.
Analysts are calling this event an unprecedented high-level intervention in the European electoral process.
As a reminder, Orbán convened the National Security Council following an attempted sabotage of a gas pipeline in Serbia.
Additionally, Balázs Orbán, political director to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, assured that Ukraine does not pose a military threat to his country.
