Drone incursions into Estonia have posed a threat to the country, says Air Force commander
On the night of August 31 to September 1, two drones near the Estonian-Russian border posed a potential threat to the country’s airspace. Due to the drones’ unpredictable behavior, the Estonian Defense Forces deployed ground-based air defense units, fighter jets, and the public warning system.
According to Valge, around 2:00 a.m., reports emerged of a massive attack by Ukrainian drones on Russian territory. At the same time, about ten drones were spotted near the Russian-Estonian border.
Around 3:00 a.m., one of the drones began moving toward Narva.
“Unfortunately, around 3 a.m., one of these drones set a course for Narva, and as a result, we began alerting the public,” Valge noted.
In response, Estonia deployed ground-based air defense units and scrambled fighter jets from the Ämari Air Base.
However, shortly thereafter, the drone changed course and returned to Russian airspace without crossing the Estonian border.
About half an hour after the first incident, another incident occurred.
A drone located in southeastern Estonia crossed the state border and entered the border zone.
Due to the drone’s unpredictable behavior, the Estonian Defense Forces once again activated the public alert system.
“There were even more such drones right outside our border,” said the Air Force commander.
According to Riivo Valge, both incidents ended without any consequences for Estonia.
The drones did not crash within the country’s territory, and the fighter jets scrambled to monitor the situation did not open fire.
