Zelenskyy will meet with the full membership of the U.S. Senate
The entire U.S. Senate has been invited to talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. One of the main topics of the meeting will be a discussion of a new package of anti-Russian sanctions, which Senator Lindsey Graham’s colleagues are pushing forward following his death.
The Ukrainian president’s visit to the United States is linked, in particular, to his participation in the memorial service for Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who died of an aortic rupture shortly after a trip to Kyiv.
According to the publication, the entire U.S. Senate has been invited to talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during which further support for Ukraine and new sanctions pressure on Russia are expected to be discussed.
During his lifetime, Lindsey Graham was one of the most active advocates for tightening sanctions against Russia, particularly targeting its energy sector.
Following his death, U.S. lawmakers are continuing to work on the bipartisan Graham–Blumenthal bill (the Sanctioning Russia Act), which Congress also views as a way to honor the senator’s memory.
The bill, authored by Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, proposes to significantly increase economic pressure on Russia and its partners.
Among the bill’s key provisions are:
- sanctions against the Russian leadership, state-owned banks, the energy sector, and the “shadow fleet”;
- the authority of the U.S. president to impose secondary tariffs of up to 100% on countries that continue to purchase significant volumes of Russian oil, gas, and other energy resources;
- the ability to temporarily defer the application of certain sanctions or tariffs if it is in the U.S. national interest.
It is noted that during the drafting of the document, the maximum rate of secondary tariffs was reduced from 500% to 100% following consultations among lawmakers.
It was previously reported that Volodymyr Zelenskyy is visiting the U.S., during which he is also scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump. The White House has already confirmed that talks between the leaders will take place.
It is expected that, alongside bilateral talks, the key topics of the Ukrainian delegation’s meetings with U.S. lawmakers will be continued military support for Ukraine and increased sanctions pressure on Russia.
