Google Play has begun removing Russian government-controlled apps, including VK, Mail.ru, and MAX

A number of popular Russian services—which have come under state control in recent years—have begun to disappear from the Google Play Store. These include social networks, messaging apps, email services, and multimedia platforms.

In particular, the following apps are no longer available on Google Play:

  • MAX;
  • Odnoklassniki;
  • Mail.ru;
  • VK;
  • Mail Cloud;
  • Zen;
  • VK Music;
  • VK Messenger;
  • VK Calls;
  • VK Video;
  • VK Live Video;
  • VK Dating;
  • VK Admin;
  • VK Play;
  • VK Teams;
  • VK Mail;
  • Yula;
  • Marusya.

According to users, these services have gradually come under the control of the Russian government. Google has now begun removing apps from Google Play that are owned or controlled by Russian government agencies.

As a reminder, Apple, Google, and GitHub websites are no longer accessible in Russia. 

Russia has threatened Apple with a billion-ruble fine over its search engine and Russian apps. 

Apple explained the removal of the Russian app VK from the App Store.
