BMW to unveil new generation of 3 Series on September 29 — Motor1

BMW will hold the world premiere of the new-generation 3 Series sedan on the evening of September 29 in the United States and early in the morning of September 30 in Europe. As Motor1 reports, the eighth-generation model has the internal index G50 and will receive a significantly revised design and interior incorporating solutions from the electric BMW i3.

Separate platforms for the 3 Series and i3

Despite the expected stylistic similarity, the internal-combustion-engine 3 Series and the fully electric i3 will be built on different architectures. ICE versions of the 3 Series will retain the CLAR platform, while the i3 is based on the Neue Klasse architecture, which is also used by the iX3.

The new 3 Series is expected to have fewer physical controls in the cabin and a greater focus on screens. Motor1 suggests that, due to the central tunnel for the driveshaft and exhaust system, rear-seat space may be more limited than in the i3 with its flat floor.

M350 xDrive to replace M340i xDrive

Along with the regular versions, BMW will unveil the M350 xDrive, which is set to replace the current M340i xDrive. It will receive a more powerful inline six-cylinder engine and four exhaust outlets. The model is intended to have a rear-wheel-drive mode, but it will initially be unavailable: BMW plans to activate it via an over-the-air software update in 2027.

Below the M350 xDrive in the range, gasoline four-cylinder engines and plug-in hybrid powertrains are expected. BMW previously said that there would be no other six-cylinder versions of the 3 Series apart from the future M3. According to the publication, the future of diesel versions remains uncertain.

Production of the new sedan will be moved from the Munich plant to Dingolfing in Germany. BMW has also stated that recycled materials will be used for a quarter of the vehicle's structure.
