2027 Ford F-150 to get hands-free BlueCruise for towing

As InsideEVs reports, the 2027 model-year Ford F-150 pickup will receive the BlueCruise with Towing feature. It will allow hands-free driving on interstate highways while towing. The system will keep the vehicle and cargo within the lane, but the driver must watch the road and be ready to take control: BlueCruise remains a Level 2 automation system.

Towing up to 10,000 pounds

According to Ford, with BlueCruise with Towing, the F-150 will be able to tow up to 10,000 pounds. The company said that the software development took into account trailer length, cargo weight, load dynamics, wind and other factors. They affect the vehicle's steering, acceleration and braking.

Ford said that 76% of F-150 owners use their pickups for towing at least once. Last year, owners of these models drove 118 million miles with BlueCruise activated, but the system had previously not supported driving with a trailer.

Conditions and limitations

To activate BlueCruise with Towing, the driver must create a trailer profile and specify its exact dimensions. The system will not perform automatic lane changes, will not operate in roadwork zones and will not allow driving faster than 75 miles per hour.

Onboard sensors will also determine possible pickup overloading and detect anomalies, including trailer sway. In such cases, the system may limit speed or hand control over to the driver. The feature will be available for F-150 trims from XLT and above, while the base XL and STX will not have it. General Motors' Super Cruise system has supported towing since 2022.
