Lamborghini says speed is not enough for a modern supercar — Motor1

In Milan, Italy, Lamborghini said that acceleration figures and top speed alone are no longer enough to define a car as a supercar. Temerario model line director Paolo Racchetti said that a vehicle’s dynamic capabilities and the emotions of driving are becoming increasingly important, Motor1 reports.

According to Racchetti, speed remains an important component of a car’s characteristics, but it is not a sufficient criterion on its own. He noted that a supercar should offer not only acceleration and speed, but also driving emotions.

Electric vehicles are changing the perception of dynamics

Lamborghini links the change in approach to the fact that electric family sedans and SUVs are already capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 miles per hour in about three seconds. Against this backdrop, acceleration figures that were previously an exclusive feature of supercars make less of an impression.

At the same time, the company is not abandoning electrification. The Revuelto, Temerario, and Urus SE models are electrified in one way or another. The brand’s next, fourth model — the GT 2+2, inspired by the Lanzador concept — will receive a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The electric model has been postponed

Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann previously confirmed that the brand’s first fully electric vehicle had been postponed indefinitely, although development is continuing. Motor1 notes that Lamborghini does not want its cars to be reduced to merely expensive vehicles with high acceleration figures.

The return of a manual transmission is also not a priority. Racchetti acknowledged that some customers will continue to ask for such a transmission because of its connection to the brand’s traditions, but Lamborghini is focused on further developing its new vehicle architecture.
