Rivian updates R1S and R1T electric vehicles to RivianOS 2

Rivian has begun rolling out the 2026.31 over-the-air update for the R1S electric SUV and the R1T pickup truck. It moves all vehicles in the R1 lineup — first- and second-generation models — to RivianOS 2, the software foundation of the infotainment system that is also used in the R2 model. As InsideEVs reports, this is the largest onboard software update for the R1.

Updated interface

The company has redesigned the multimedia system interface in the R1S and R1T. The update includes a new layout of controls, a revised settings menu, and a universal search bar. Rivian said the new system should operate faster and be more intuitive than the previous version.

Second-generation R1 vehicles and the R2 use the Unreal Engine 5 engine for vehicle and environment graphics. First-generation R1 models will remain on Unreal Engine 4. Rivian explained this decision by the need to maintain screen responsiveness.

Navigation and mobile app

RivianOS 2 integrates Google Maps and Waze alerts into the infotainment system. Drivers will be able to receive notifications about police presence, speed cameras, and other warnings that may arise along the planned route.

Other update features include a standalone weather app and the ability to change a trip route through the Rivian mobile app. The system still does not support Apple CarPlay.

Rivian said that the R1 and R2 now run on a unified software stack. According to the company, this will make it possible to roll out future feature and interface updates to both models, taking into account the hardware capabilities of each. At the same time, a software update cannot add a more powerful computer or new sensors to vehicles.
