Rivian recalls nearly 99,000 electric vehicles over camera issue — InsideEVs
In the United States, Rivian is recalling nearly 99,000 R1S, R1T and R2 electric vehicles due to a software issue that, under certain conditions, may block the rear-view camera image. The recall covers 62,259 R1S vehicles, 34,088 R1T pickups and 2,481 R2 crossovers.
As InsideEVs reports, this is the first official recall for the Rivian R2 model, deliveries of which began in June. According to documents Rivian filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a system notification may obscure the camera image when reverse gear is engaged.
When the problem occurs
According to Rivian’s information in documents submitted to the NHTSA, the notification may appear if the driver simultaneously shifts the vehicle into reverse and disables the stability control system. In that case, a prompt to reactivate the system appears on the screen and may block the rear camera view until the vehicle begins moving.

U.S. federal safety standards require the rear-view camera image to appear no later than two seconds after reverse gear is engaged and to remain unobstructed. The described software behavior does not comply with these requirements.
Software update
Rivian is resolving the issue with a software update, without replacing physical vehicle components. The company said the fix has already been installed on 95% of affected R1 vehicles and 96% of affected R2 models.
At the same time, this recall does not cover other Rivian owners’ complaints about camera performance after the Rivian OS2 update. Some users reported delays, freezing or deterioration in camera image quality.
