Toyota recalls about 10,000 electric C-HR crossovers sold in North America in the US
In the United States, Toyota is recalling approximately 10,000 electric 2026 model-year C-HR crossovers sold in North America. In some vehicles, the electric powertrain may shut down while driving, increasing the risk of a crash, InsideEVs reports.
Reason for the recall
According to the automaker, the problem is caused by the software of the Battery Electric Vehicle Electronic Control Unit. It may lead to overcharging of the traction battery during regenerative braking if its charge level is already high.
During regeneration, the electric motor operates as a generator: it slows the vehicle down and returns energy to the high-voltage battery. If the battery is fully charged, it cannot accept additional energy. In this situation, protection systems shut down the system to prevent overcharging.

Update at the dealer
The malfunction can be fixed by updating the control unit software. Owners of recalled C-HRs need to visit a dealership, as the model does not support over-the-air software updates.
InsideEVs notes that the electric Toyota C-HR entered the US market simultaneously with the new RAV4, but received an older version of the infotainment system instead of the newer Arene platform. At the time of publication, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had not yet released the relevant recall documents.
