Volkswagen unveils Mission Efficiency concept with record aerodynamics

Volkswagen has unveiled the electric Mission Efficiency concept, which was developed in Wolfsburg, Germany. The model is claimed to have a drag coefficient of 0.158. According to Motor1, the company calls the vehicle the most aerodynamic road car approved for use on public roads.

The concept is built on the MEB+ platform with front-wheel drive and uses the same electric motor and battery as the compact Volkswagen ID. Polo. Mission Efficiency is equipped with a 135 hp permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor producing 264 Nm of torque, as well as an NMC battery with a usable capacity of 54.9 kWh.

Consumption figures

During an “ideal” run at a constant speed of 68 km/h, with no elevation changes and with the climate system and other auxiliary consumers switched off, the electric vehicle consumed 6.48 kWh per 100 km.

On a documented route from Wolfsburg to Vienna via Poznań and Olomouc, the vehicle covered 1,278.36 km. The average speed was 67.72 km/h, while the maximum speed was 138 km/h. Energy consumption amounted to 7.51 kWh per 100 km including charging losses, or 6.89 kWh without them. The battery was charged once along the route, and after arriving in Vienna, Volkswagen said the remaining range was another 164 km.

Design and interior

Mission Efficiency is 4,775 mm long, 1,744 mm wide and 1,392 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. The body tapers toward the rear, the rear wheels are almost completely enclosed, and the underbody is largely fully covered. Three active cooling shutters are installed at the front and can operate in five configurations.

The vehicle received special wheel deflectors and Continental tires based on the EcoContact 7, with reduced rolling resistance. Volkswagen retained conventional exterior mirrors: following tests, the company did not see a sufficient efficiency advantage from cameras to justify the additional cost and energy consumption.

Mission Efficiency is a 2+2 coupe with a large rear hatch and a 481-liter luggage compartment. The rear seats fold down to create a cargo area up to 1.8 meters long. Photovoltaic panels with an output of 370 W are integrated into the roof and rear hatch to power onboard systems; under favorable conditions, they can add up to 30 km of range per day.

The German Record Institute RID certified Mission Efficiency in the category of the most efficient near-production four-seat electric vehicle for daily use.
