In honor of Vyshyvanka Day, sculptures of the city's founders were restored in Kyiv
On May 21 in Kyiv, to mark Vyshyvanka Day, the mini-sculptures of the city’s founders—Kyiv, Shchek, Khoriv, and Lybid—were given a makeover. The bronze figures on Poshtova Square were adorned with vyshyvankas from various regions of Ukraine. Sculptor Volodymyr Zhuravel also spoke about future updates to these art installations.
The author of the monument, sculptor Volodymyr Zhuravel, announced this initiative on social media.
According to the artist, each figure received a shirt with a unique regional pattern:
- Lybid – in a Chernihiv embroidered shirt;
- Kyiv – in a Volyn embroidered shirt;
- Shchek – in a Transcarpathian embroidered shirt;
- Khoriv – in a Kyiv-style shirt.
“Friends, Happy Vyshyvanka Day! We’ve dressed the little ones up again for the holiday,” Zhuravel greeted Kyiv residents and visitors.
The sculptor noted that the next dressing of the figures is scheduled for Kyiv Day on May 30–31.
In 2026, World Vyshyvanka Day will celebrate its 20th anniversary. The holiday, which began as a student initiative, has today become a large-scale international movement uniting Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine around the world. This year’s theme is dedicated to supporting the cultural heritage of Ukraine’s occupied regions.
