The Kyiv Regional Council has established the Volodymyr Boreyko Landscape Reserve on the Dnipro River

UA NEWS 22 May 2026 11:42
The Kyiv Regional Council has established the Volodymyr Boreyko Landscape Reserve on the Dnipro River

On May 21, the Kyiv Regional Council adopted an official resolution establishing a new nature reserve—a landscape reserve of local significance named after the distinguished ecologist Volodymyr Boreiko.

The newly established protected area includes two unique Dnipro islands: Pokal and Roslavsky.

This initiative aims to preserve rare species of flora and fauna, as well as to honor the memory of the renowned Ukrainian conservationist, who tragically died before he could see the culmination of his many years of work.

This nature reserve was developed in collaboration with Volodymyr Boreiko, who worked for a long time on its detailed design.

For the renowned ecologist and long-time director of the Kyiv Ecological and Cultural Center (KECC), this project became one of his last official conservation efforts to establish new protected areas in Ukraine.

Colleagues and like-minded individuals proposed naming the nature reserve after him to honor the memory of a man who fought uncompromisingly for decades to preserve Ukraine’s natural environment.

Volodymyr Boreyko was one of the symbols of Ukraine’s modern environmental movement, the author of numerous environmental initiatives and legislative changes in the field of nature conservation.

Thanks to his active civic and scientific work, hundreds of hectares of unique forests, floodplain meadows, and rare habitats across the country were saved.

The new status of the islands on the Dnipro River will forever cement his significant contribution to the development of nature conservation and protect these territories from chaotic development or commercial use.

The total area of the newly established landscape reserve of local significance is 426.5 hectares.

Officially, the reserve includes two unique islands with a total area of 426.5 hectares: Roslavsky Island—299.5 hectares and Pokal Island—127 hectares.

Ecologists note that this is one of the few areas of the Dnipro floodplain where natural meadows, wetland complexes, floodplain forests, and habitats for a large number of rare plant and animal species have been preserved.

Thanks to the absence of aggressive human impact, a unique closed ecosystem has formed on the islands.

Red List species of plants, birds, and insects have been recorded within the reserve, as well as the presence of the white-tailed eagle—one of Europe’s largest birds of prey.

Protecting these protected areas will help preserve natural migration corridors and create conditions for the recovery of endangered species.

Kyiv residents are protesting en masse against a fare increase to 30 hryvnias

Kyiv’s 4,875-hryvnia transit pass will be one of the most expensive in Europe

Earlier, a petition against the fare hike was registered in Kyiv.

As a reminder, Kyiv plans to raise public transit fares to 30 hryvnias per trip. The new fares may be introduced on July 15, 2026, following the completion of regulatory procedures and consultations with the public and labor unions.
