Businesses at the Bessarabian Market are closing en masse due to low foot traffic

Businesses at the Bessarabian Market are closing en masse due to low foot traffic

A new food hall at the historic Bessarabsky Market in downtown Kyiv has faced a critical shortage of customers, leading well-known food brands to close their locations en masse and remove their equipment.

The modern food hall project launched last December, but after six months of operation, it has still failed to attract a steady stream of customers

The large-scale renovation of part of the Bessarabka Market was planned to create a large, modern space with 400 seats, which initially hosted 17 popular food operators.

Despite significant investments and a high-profile opening, the restaurateurs’ expectations were not met due to empty halls and vacant tables.

Well-known brands such as “Gelarty” and “Sushi Icons” have already officially left the market; “Ministry of Desserts” has completely ceased operations; and the “Vitach” project is currently actively winding down its activities.

Experts cite serious logistical and infrastructure problems in the capital’s city center as the main reasons for the failure of this ambitious gastronomic hub.

The biggest challenge for potential visitors was the lack of convenient parking near the market, which prevented drivers from reaching the location by car.

In addition, the nature of pedestrian traffic around the historic building had a negative impact, as passersby mostly walk past the market on their way to other destinations and do not go inside.

Experienced restaurateurs note that even a strong brand and substantial capital do not guarantee success if the concept does not take the specifics of the location into account.

The success of any restaurant directly depends on foot traffic and the purchasing power of the target audience in a specific part of the city.

“A business doesn’t thrive just because of a beautiful interior; it needs to be in the right location. Anyone, regardless of experience or investment, can fail,” states Denis Sukhovoy in his video.

This was reported by Denis Sukhovoy, founder of Pro Bakery, in his themed video blog.
