A petition opposing the increase in public transportation fares has been filed in Kyiv

A petition has appeared on the Kyiv City Council website calling for a halt to fare increases on Kyiv’s public transportation until the end of martial law. It also calls for an audit of transportation spending before any increases are implemented.

The petition was submitted by Oleksiy Ksenich, head of the NGO “Gray Corps.”

He notes that during wartime, when thousands of Kyiv residents are supporting the military, have unstable incomes, and are struggling to survive under difficult conditions, raising fares seems unfair, to say the least, and an immediate increase in the cost of a ride to 30 UAH will be a heavy blow for a large portion of passengers. Furthermore, Kyiv has one of the largest budgets in Ukraine. Therefore, the city should first present an audit of expenditures, demonstrate the efficiency of municipal enterprises, and reduce questionable spending, rather than shifting the burden onto residents.

The petition was published at 4:16 p.m. on May 18, and by 10:10 p.m. it had already gathered 1,520 signatures out of the 6,000 required for consideration.

As a reminder, Kyiv plans to raise public transit fares to 30 hryvnias per trip. The new rates may be implemented starting July 15, 2026, following the completion of regulatory procedures and consultations with the public and labor unions.

In Lviv, public transit fares were raised on May 16, and now prices depend on the payment method and can reach 30 hryvnias per trip. Authorities attribute the fare increase to rising costs for fuel and vehicle maintenance.
