Yeat’s Cocoon receives mostly critical assessment — Rolling Stone
Rolling Stone published a critical review of Cocoon, the EP by rapper and producer Yeat. The EP consists of seven tracks, runs for less than 17 minutes and, according to the author, returns the musician to the sound of his early work while offering almost no new ideas.
The publication notes that on his March album ADL, the 26-year-old California-born performer turned to a more traditional pop sound. By contrast, Cocoon appears at first glance to be a return to his earlier style, although the reviewer believes Yeat has little left to add to the musical techniques that made him popular.
Track with Drake
The reviewer called MISS MY DAWG, recorded with Drake, the EP’s strongest track, noting that Drake takes the leading role in the song. The track was previously featured in Drake’s film Fear of Missing Out and became the artists’ fourth collaboration. In the author’s view, both rappers speak about loss and personal growth in the song, while Yeat’s performance carries emotional tension.

At the same time, the reviewer assessed the title track COCOON much more reservedly, drawing attention to its overloaded and repetitive rhyming. He also believes that imitation of Migos’ style intensifies the composition’s monotony.
Searching for an individual style
The review also traces the influence of Travis Scott: in particular, the author compared the beginning of EARNËD IT to material from the album Astroworld. Rolling Stone also mentioned rumors that in early September Travis Scott allegedly asked for Yeat’s verse to be removed from the track Eaters from Young Thug’s compilation Slime Language 3. The article calls Yeat’s track ON NOTHING a possible response to these rumors and a potential diss at Scott.
The reviewer also assessed HOLY WATËR, produced by Synthetic, critically, although he noted certain traits of Yeat’s early style in it. Before the release of ADL, the musician told Zane Lowe that he sought to change music and create real music and art for a young audience. According to Rolling Stone, after ADL and 2093, Yeat continues to search for a place for his sound amid changing listener tastes.
