Chinese dance drama Mulan debuts in New York — ECNS
The Chinese dance drama “Mulan,” performed by the Ningbo Performing Arts Group, debuted in New York, United States. The production was staged at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center from Friday to Sunday, ECNS reports.
Dance and martial arts
The performance tells the story of Mulan’s life as a soldier. The choreography, inspired by Chinese culture, incorporates elements of traditional martial arts. The production emphasizes the heroine’s strength and tenderness and received warm applause from the audience.

Four performances in New York
Emily Wilcox, a professor of Chinese studies at William & Mary, who saw the production for the second time, noted Mulan’s multidimensional portrayal. According to her, the heroine is shown not only as a heroic figure but also as a woman.
The choreographers of “Mulan” are Zhou Liya and Han Zhen. The performance was first presented in 2017 and has since been staged more than 100 times in China and abroad. The production has also received several major Chinese awards in dance. The New York program included four performances and cultural events dedicated to the art and tourism of Ningbo.
