Madonna paid tribute to British music producer William Orbit, who died at home on July 23 at the age of 69. In an Instagram post, the singer called her longtime collaborator “brilliant” and “otherworldly” and recalled their work together on the album *Ray of Light*.

The producer’s family announced his death. Orbit, whose real name was William Waywright, was a Grammy Award winner. The cause of death was not disclosed, according to BBC News.

Madonna wrote that meeting and working with Orbit was a creative revelation for her. She said the producer inspired her to sing and write in ways she hadn’t before, without worrying about whether her words made sense. The singer also noted that Orbit’s music allowed her to “visit many places.”

Orbit helped revitalize Madonna’s sound in 1998 through his work on *Ray of Light*. The album blended pop music with electronic dance music, ambient techno, and trip-hop, and won three Grammy Awards. The producer also worked with Madonna on her 2000 album *Music* and created several tracks for *MDNA*, released in 2012.

The London-based producer has also collaborated with Blur, Pink, U2, All Saints, Robbie Williams, and Britney Spears. Madonna noted that, despite working with other producers throughout her career, she has never forgotten Orbit or the “magical time” she spent with him.
