Peter Gabriel unveils the song Face the Wall — Rolling Stone

Peter Gabriel has unveiled Face the Wall, the tenth released song from his upcoming studio album o\i. The song’s lyrics address themes of aging, illness and the inevitability of death, Rolling Stone reports.

A dark version of the song

Like the previous songs from o\i, as well as tracks from Gabriel’s 2023 album i/o, Face the Wall was recorded in two versions — the Bright-Side Mix and the Dark-Side Mix. The musician released the song’s Dark-Side Mix, produced by Chad Blake.

According to Gabriel, the song’s lyrics began with reflections on aging, confronting illness and looking death in the face. He noted that cultures where death is seen as a natural part of life appear more comfortable with the subject and live life more fully.

The musician also described music as a cathartic process. At the end of the song, the line “I see you coming through” is heard, which, he said, provides grounds for hope, although the situation in the song gradually worsens and becomes more intense.

The song is accompanied by a photograph of Tadashi Kawamata’s work The Nest. Amos Rex — an installation in which an avalanche of wooden chairs descends through a building toward an unusually positioned stairwell. Gabriel said that this image was what sparked his interest in Kawamata’s work.

Gabriel has been gradually releasing songs from o\i since the beginning of 2026, timing a new track to every full moon. The series began with Been Undone (Dark-Side Mix), released on January 3; Put the Bucket Down, A Hard Lesson and I Belong to the Sky followed. There are likely two more tracks remaining before the album’s full release, while details of its release have not yet been announced.
