More than 55% of streams of Britney Spears’ song came from Gen Z — Rolling Stone

More than 55% of global streams of Britney Spears’ song I’m a Slave 4 U over the past month came from members of Generation Z — people born between 1997 and 2012. Rolling Stone reports, citing Spotify data.

Listeners who did not see the premiere

According to Spotify, 27% of streams of the track were generated by users born after Spears premiered the song on MTV. I’m a Slave 4 U became the first single from the singer’s third studio album, Britney.

Spotify also recorded more than 40 million “discoveries” of Britney Spears’ catalog this year. This figure includes listeners who play her songs for the first time, as well as those who returned to them after a break of at least six months. About 60% of such “discoveries” were made by Generation Z users.

Album anniversary

Spotify notes that the number of streams of I’m a Slave 4 U increases every year around this period, when the song’s anniversary is marked. The track was produced by The Neptunes; its sound differed from Spears’ previous teen-pop releases with elaborate production.

The album Britney will mark its 25th anniversary in October. When the record reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Spears became the first artist whose first three studio albums debuted at the top of the chart. According to Rolling Stone, the album has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.
