Video: The wind blew away architect Anna Kamishan's "floating synagogue" in Venice
In Venice, strong winds destroyed the installation “Nabatele” by artist and architect Anna Kamyshan, which was part of the parallel program of the 61st Venice Biennale. The helium-filled structure, shaped like a synagogue, was meant to hover over the Venetian Lagoon.
The art installation was designed to withstand winds of up to 20 knots, but during the storm, wind speeds reached about 50 knots. According to the artist’s concept, the installation referenced René Magritte’s painting *The Castle in the Pyrenees* and the wooden synagogues of Eastern European shtetls, embodying the themes of uncertainty, forced displacement, and the unreliability of shelter.
Anna Kamyshan, a native of Lviv, lived and worked in Moscow for about seven years, and from 2019 to 2021 she headed the conceptual development department at the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center in Kyiv. In 2023, she was spotted in London with Russian oligarch Mikhail Friedman in an investigation by journalist Mykhailo Tkach.
