In Ghana, an electrification project will cover 90 communities in the Oti Region — MyJoyOnline
In Ghana, a government electrification project is set to cover 90 communities across all nine districts of the Oti Region. The initiative provides for connecting settlements without access to electricity and upgrading existing networks for more stable supply, MyJoyOnline reports.
Electrification of nine districts
The Turnkey Electrification Project will be implemented under the Rural Electricity Acceleration and Urban Intensification Initiative. Deputy Minister of Energy and Green Transition Richard Gyan-Mensah said the rural component of the programme is intended to provide electricity to communities that are still not connected to the grid. The urban component is aimed at improving existing infrastructure and increasing supply reliability.
Beneficiary communities include settlements in the districts of Guan, Buem, Akan, Biakoye, Nkwanta South, Nkwanta North, Krachi Nchumuru, Krachi West and Krachi East. The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition is working on the project together with the Electricity Company of Ghana and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company, while Le-Grino has been selected as the project contractor in the region.

Transformers and solar lighting
According to Gyan-Mensah, 2,000 distribution transformers have been handed over for installation to help stabilise electricity supply. For remote communities located far from existing networks, the authorities are considering the use of mini-grids.
The government also plans to provide about 23,000 solar streetlights across the country to illuminate communities and highways. Local authorities are expected to cover part of the installation costs, while the ministry will finance the remainder. Separate work is underway on phased electricity connections along the Eastern Corridor, including between Ho and Asikpe, Kadjebi and Ho, Adobire and Salaga, as well as Tamale and Salaga.
The Ghanaian government plans to extend the electrification strategy to all 16 regions of the country over the next four years.
