UK may approve development of Jackdaw gas field
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham is expected to approve the development of the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea by the end of the month. This was reported by OilPrice, citing the BBC, which quoted unnamed sources.
Previous approval was revoked
The Jackdaw and Rosebank projects initially received development approval several years ago. However, environmental activists challenged the decision in court, after which the permits were revoked because the impact of the development on the climate had not been taken into account when the decision was made.
OilPrice writes that the development issue is being reconsidered amid rising oil and gas prices, as well as the UK’s increasing dependence on imported energy resources. After taking office, Burnham said that the country would not be able to abandon the use of oil and gas for some time.

Reserves and infrastructure
Jackdaw and Rosebank are operated by Adura, a joint venture between Shell and Equinor. According to the partner companies’ estimate, Jackdaw will be able to cover 6.5% of the UK’s gas demand at peak production. Rosebank contains between 300 million and 500 million barrels of oil, according to their data.
Shell and Equinor said that the infrastructure for Jackdaw is 99% ready, so gas supplies could begin as early as this winter. At the same time, analytics company Wood Mackenzie estimates that about 90% of the UK’s commercially viable oil and gas reserves have already been depleted. Environmental activists continue to oppose the development of the fields.
