Over the past five years, Malaysian authorities have uncovered approximately 14,000 illegal mining sites, causing losses exceeding $1.1 billion for the state energy firm TNB.

Drones and thermal sensors are employed to detect miners, as operators frequently relocate, mask noise, and conceal equipment. This year alone, about 3,000 cases of electricity theft have been recorded. Authorities believe that organized criminal groups are behind these schemes.
