Trump Heads to NATO Summit in a Bad Mood; Allies Fear Conflict — CNN
Today, July 7, the 36th NATO summit begins in Ankara and will last two days. Heads of state and government from all 32 Alliance countries, including U.S. President Donald Trump, will gather at the presidential complex.
U.S. President Donald Trump has arrived at the NATO summit amid strained relations with European allies. According to CNN, American and European officials are not confident that the meeting of Alliance leaders will proceed without conflict, as the White House has recently been increasingly critical of NATO and the level of support from allies.
The network reports, citing its own sources, that Trump had previously expressed his reluctance to attend the summit on multiple occasions. According to CNN’s sources, he agreed to attend largely because the event is taking place in Turkey, and the U.S. president considers Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan a friend. At the same time, according to the sources, Trump’s team was made to understand that his refusal to attend would be perceived as a sign of disrespect toward the Turkish president.
According to CNN, Trump has sharply criticized NATO allies in private conversations in recent days, claiming that the Alliance does not provide sufficient support. Such rhetoric, the publication notes, is increasingly common in his public speeches as well.
European leaders, for their part, hope to avoid an open confrontation during the summit. One of the main arguments for Washington is expected to be the new commitments by European countries to increase defense spending. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, as CNN notes, already used a similar approach during the Alliance’s previous summit, demonstrating to Trump the growth in member countries’ defense budgets.
The U.S. military presence in Europe could be a separate topic of discussion. Experts emphasize that NATO countries need a clear position from Washington on future plans in order to understand which forces will remain in Europe and how to compensate for a possible reduction in U.S. troop levels.
In addition, support for Ukraine will remain one of the summit’s key issues. According to CNN, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will attend the leaders’ dinner but will not participate in the Alliance’s working sessions. At the same time, he is expected to hold a separate meeting with Donald Trump. European allies also plan to announce new military aid packages for Ukraine, estimated to be worth tens of billions of euros.
