A Renaissance Regarding Ukraine Has Begun in the U.S.: Experts Assess the Outcome of the Meeting Between Zelenskyy and Trump
The meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington marks a new phase in relations between the two countries. Oleksiy Buryachenko, president of the International Institute for Security Studies, made this statement during an expert discussion.
According to him, one of the practical outcomes of the talks was the announced visit to Kyiv by U.S. President Donald Trump’s special representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Oleksiy Yakubin stated that there have been noticeable changes in Donald Trump’s attitude toward Ukraine.
“We see that Trump has begun what I would call a renaissance in his relationship with Ukraine. When he first took office, he believed he could very easily resolve the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and focus on China. But then something went wrong.”
According to the expert, the U.S. increasingly views Russia as a long-term threat.
“Under Trump, the U.S. is now beginning to view Russia as a threat—a long-term threat. And, in fact, they are considering all possible means of support to mitigate this threat.”
Military analyst Denis Popovich stated that Ukraine may face a shortage of Patriot missiles.
“Unfortunately, I have some doubts that we’ll be able to secure that many missiles. I’d be happy to be proven wrong, but let’s face the facts: there are numbers, and there are aspirations, and sometimes these aspirations, unfortunately, may not align with what’s actually possible.”
Oleksiy Buryachenko, president of the International Institute for Security Studies, also welcomed the progress on the U.S. sanctions bill against Russia.
“This certainly opens up great opportunities for us. Once it is passed, the U.S. president will have a powerful weapon at his disposal with which he can strike at the Russian Federation.”
At the same time, he emphasized that the main goal remains to compel the Kremlin to engage in genuine negotiations.
“We don’t know if we’ll have enough strength to force Putin to sit down at a constructive negotiating table rather than issue ultimatums demanding surrender. But in any case, as far as I’m concerned, we’re currently doing everything we can to make that happen.”
