Bondar and Ocheretko will not miss the match against Northern Ireland

Bondar and Ocheretko will not miss the match against Northern Ireland

Valeriy Bondar and Oleg Ocheretko will be able to play for the Ukrainian national team in the Nations League match against Northern Ireland. Earlier, head coach Andrea Maldera stated that both players would miss the next game due to yellow cards, but the Ukrainian Football Association later clarified that this information was incorrect. Both players have received only one caution each in this edition of the tournament.

Defender Valeriy Bondar and midfielder Oleg Ocheretko are not suspended and will be able to help the Ukrainian national team in their next Nations League match. Earlier, after the match against Georgia, Ukraine’s head coach Andrea Maldera stated that both players would not play in the next match. The coach attributed this to the yellow cards the players received during the match. “Unfortunately, we received two yellow cards, which is quite problematic for us: Bondar and Ocheretko will not be able to play in the next match,” Maldera said after the draw with Georgia.

Later, the UAF clarified the situation. The issue likely arose due to a nuance in the translation of the Italian coach’s words. According to the Ukrainian side, Bondar and Ocheretko received their first yellow cards in the new Nations League campaign. Therefore, there are no grounds for automatic suspension due to an accumulation of cautions. Consequently, both players remain available to the coaching staff ahead of the game against Northern Ireland.

What Happened After the Match Against Georgia

Ukraine played Georgia to a 0-0 draw in the second round of the Nations League. After the final whistle, Malder addressed the disciplinary situation within the team and specifically mentioned Bondar and Ocheretko. His comments were initially interpreted as confirmation that the players would miss the next match. As a result, reports of their suspension began to appear in the Ukrainian sports media.

However, it later became clear that neither player had accumulated the required number of cautions to automatically miss the match. Thus, this was not a matter of revoking a previously imposed penalty, but rather of correcting the information regarding the fact of disqualification itself.

Who Are Bondar and Ocheretko

Valeriy Bondar is a center back for the Ukrainian national team and Donetsk’s Shakhtar. He is regularly called up to the national team and is among the players the coaching staff relies on in defense. Oleg Ocheretko is a midfielder for Shakhtar Donetsk who is also part of the Ukrainian national team’s roster. In recent years, he has gradually gained more experience at the international level.

In the current national team roster, both players remain available for Nations League matches. The UAF has included Ocheretko on the list of midfielders for the September and October matches, while Bondar is on the list of defenders.

What’s Next for Ukraine in the Nations League

After two rounds, the Ukrainian team has matches against Hungary and Georgia. In the first round, Ukraine defeated Hungary 1–0, and in the second, they drew 0–0 with Georgia. Thus, the team has earned four points.

Northern Ireland will be the next opponent. The match is scheduled for October 2, 2026. In the UAF calendar, this match is listed as a home game for Ukraine. Kickoff is at 9:45 p.m. Kyiv time. Northern Ireland also earned points at the start of the tournament. In the first round, the team defeated Georgia 1–0.

This means that the October 2 match will be crucial for the group standings. However, it is still too early to predict the final standings after two rounds, as several matches remain to be played.

The UAF has corrected an important detail

Thus, the information regarding the suspensions of Bondar and Ocheretko turned out to be incorrect. Neither player will miss the match due to an accumulation of yellow cards. For Andrea Malderi, this means he will have more options for selecting the starting lineup ahead of the match against Northern Ireland. This is especially important given that the tournament schedule calls for the national team to play several matches in a short period.

Bondar and Ocheretko are currently preparing for the next match alongside the team. Their participation in the game will now depend on the coaching staff’s decision and the starting lineup, rather than on a disciplinary suspension.
