Hawthorn captain Emily Bates suffers leg injury in AFLW match
In Australia, Hawthorn captain Emily Bates suffered a serious right leg injury during the Australian Football League Women's (AFLW) victory over the Western Bulldogs. Hawthorn won 6.5 (41) to 4.6 (30), but Bates left the field on a stretcher late in the third quarter.
As ABC News Australia reports, the 30-year-old footballer's right leg became trapped beneath her and twisted during a tackle. Bates, who played her 100th AFLW match a week earlier, was expected to be taken to hospital for further examination.
Fracture in the third quarter
At the start of the game, the Western Bulldogs scored three of the first four goals and led by 11 points at half-time. In the third quarter, Hawthorn scored five consecutive goals, four of them before Bates' injury. The Bulldogs did not score a single point in that quarter.

Four goals from McDonagh
Irish key forward Aine McDonagh scored four goals, the best result of her career, and strengthened her lead in the season's top scorers list. After the match, Hawthorn, with three wins and two losses, entered the top eight of the standings, ahead of the Western Bulldogs on percentage.
For the Bulldogs, Isabelle Pritchard recorded the best figures of the match with 31 disposals and eight clearances. Elizabeth Georgostathis made 19 disposals.
