Manchester City beat Bournemouth thanks to Gvardiol's goal

Manchester City defeated Bournemouth 2-1 in an English Premier League match on August 23, 2026. Defender Josko Gvardiol scored the winning goal in the 91st minute, while it was Enzo Maresca's first league match as the team's head coach. This was reported by Channel NewsAsia.

City's late victory

Bournemouth opened the scoring in the 26th minute: Rayan sent Evanilson down the right flank, and after his low cross Marcus Tavernier finished unmarked at the far post. The hosts equalised in the 84th minute when Marc Guehi headed the ball into the net following a corner.

In stoppage time, Rayan Cherki played a pass through the opposition defence, and Gvardiol turned and struck the ball into the net. The goal was initially disallowed for offside, but the decision was overturned after a VAR review. Erling Haaland missed an opportunity in the first half, heading wide after a cross from Nico O'Reilly.
