Legendary Bulgarian national team goalkeeper Borislav Mihaylov has died
Borislav Mihaylov, the former captain and goalkeeper of the Bulgarian national soccer team, has passed away at the age of 63. He played for the Bulgarian national team from 1983 to 1996 and later served as president of the Bulgarian Football Union.
This was reported by Bulgarian National Television.
In November 2025, he was hospitalized after suffering a stroke.
While playing for Levski, Mihaylov won the national championship three times and the Bulgarian Cup three times. In 1986, he was named Bulgarian Footballer of the Year.
Mihaylov played for the national team from 1983 to 1996.
He participated in the 1986 World Cup (playing in 4 matches) and in the 1994 World Cup, a triumphant tournament for the Bulgarian team, where Bulgaria finished in 4th place and Mihaylov played in 7 matches. He was also the starting goalkeeper at the 1996 European Championship (3 games). He made the national team roster for the 1998 World Cup, but did not take the field once during the final stage of the tournament.
His final game in a national team jersey was a friendly against Algeria on June 5, 1998 (a 2-0 victory).
Mihaylov also served as president of the Bulgarian Football Union for 16 years (2005–2019 and 2021–2023).
