Thunderbirds sign daughter of former player for the first time — ABC News Australia
In Australia, 18-year-old netball player Jazmin McKay has joined the Adelaide Thunderbirds, becoming the first mother-daughter signing in the club’s history. Her mother, Sarah Sutter, was one of the Thunderbirds’ first players in 1997, ABC News Australia reports.
Sarah Sutter’s achievements
Sutter helped the Adelaide Thunderbirds win two championship titles, in 1998 and 1999, and served as the team’s vice-captain. Internationally, she won gold at the 1995 Netball World Championship and the 1998 Commonwealth Games.
The former defender said she was proud of her daughter’s work on and off the court. McKay said that only in recent years had she fully realised the scale of her mother’s sporting achievements. According to her, it was Sutter who taught her the basic skills of the game and supported her in life and sport.

The next step in her career
In 2026, McKay was a Thunderbirds training partner. She joins a team that has won its third championship title in four years. The club’s defenders include Jamaican netball players Shamera Sterling-Humprey and Latanya Wilson.
McKay also has achievements of her own: over the past three years, she played in state premier league finals and won each time with Contax Netball Club. The athlete said that since childhood she had dreamed of playing for the Thunderbirds and the Australia Diamonds national team, and wants to develop in order to eventually reach the international level.
