Ukrainian boxers won bronze at the European Championships

Ukrainian boxers Iryna Lutsak and Pavlo Ilyusha won bronze medals at the European Amateur Boxing Championships in Sofia, falling in the semifinals.

The competition is taking place in Bulgaria under the auspices of World Boxing, with athletes competing for medals in 20 weight classes. Both medals for the Ukrainian national team were won in the under-80-kg weight class.

In the quarterfinals, 21-year-old Iryna Lutsak defeated Bulgarian boxer Aleina Mehmed, but in the semifinals she lost to Ireland’s Lisa O’Rourke by a 0–5 judges’ decision. This is the Ukrainian boxer’s first medal at a continental championship.

On his way to the semifinals, Pavlo Ilyusha defeated Israeli boxer Daniel Ilyushonok and Armenian boxer Artush Ohanisyan, and won by technical knockout against Georgian boxer Luka Matchutadze. In the semifinal bout, the Ukrainian lost by split decision to Serbian Rastko Simic.
