In Australia, Brisbane Lions' loss to Sydney Swans linked to defensive problems
In Sydney, Australia, the Sydney Swans unexpectedly defeated the Brisbane Lions in an Australian Football League qualifying final at the SCG. After the match, Lions coach Chris Fagan suggested that the players may have underestimated the difficulty of the away fixture, although he had warned the team before the game.
Fagan told journalists that he had tried to convince the footballers that playing on Sydney's home ground would be difficult. At the same time, he suggested that deep down they may not have expected such a tough match.
Unstable defence
As ABC News Australia reports, Brisbane's loss can be explained not only by overconfidence or a lack of effort. In the author's view, the team's defence has lost consistency this season because of injuries, the age of players and constant changes to the lineup.
In 2023, the Lions conceded 100 or more points in a match only three times. In each of the two most recent championship seasons, this happened four times. This year, however, the team has already allowed opponents to score at least 100 points nine times, and eight such matches ended in defeat.

Only Jaspa Fletcher and Darcy Wilmot played every match of the season among the defenders. Dayne Zorko, Darcy Gardiner and Ryan Lester missed playing time, Jack Payne did not return after last year's knee injury, and Brandon Starcevich no longer plays for the club. Due to personnel problems, Ty Gallop, Zane Zakostelsky and Darragh Joyce received more playing time than expected, while forward Eric Hipwood was used in defence after recovering from injury.
Problems with ground balls
Brisbane relies heavily on intercepting the ball in the air, particularly thanks to Harris Andrews. However, according to ABC data, the team has difficulties when the ball ends up on the ground in its defensive zone after a contest. The Lions have been described as the league's weakest team at defending such balls in general play outside stoppage situations.
Brisbane also concedes more points from its own half than any other participant in the finals series. Against teams that attack most effectively from the defensive half, the Lions have four wins and six losses, while they won 12 of 14 matches against the remaining opponents.
Brisbane's next opponent will be the Adelaide Crows, who secured their first finals victory in a decade. Fagan noted that the team had been through a similar situation before and now has no choice but to continue fighting by the more difficult route.
