Video: Fans in Budapest Booed the Ukrainian National Anthem Before a Nations League Match
Before the start of the Nations League match between the national teams of Hungary and Ukraine at Puskás Arena in Budapest, some local fans booed the Ukrainian national anthem. The booing could be heard during the televised broadcast of the game.
The incident occurred immediately after the announcement that the Ukrainian anthem was about to be played. The most vocal reactions came from the fan sections behind the goals, where Hungarian ultras are traditionally located.
According to journalists who were present at the stadium, the negative reaction did not come from all sections of the stands. At the same time, the number of fans who whistled was significant enough for their noise to be clearly heard during the pre-match ceremony.
After the opening whistle, Hungarian fans actively supported their national team, creating a boisterous atmosphere in the stadium.
In the second half, Ukrainian players were also regularly met with boos from the stands whenever they gained possession of the ball.
The spectators reacted emotionally to the referee’s decisions as well, and the tension in the stadium persisted throughout the match.
Toward the end of the match, the situation escalated right on the field.
A brawl broke out between the players on the field, and objects were thrown from the stands onto the field. Thus, a tense atmosphere accompanied the match right up until the very end.

On September 25, the Ukrainian national team kicked off its campaign in the 2026/2027 UEFA Nations League with a match against Hungary. The match will take place at Puskás Arena in Budapest as part of the Group Stage of Division B.
On Monday, September 28, the Ukrainian national team will play its second-round match of the 2026–27 UEFA Nations League season. The Ukrainian team will face the Georgian national team on the road.
