The Ukrainian women's national hockey team crushed New Zealand at the World Championship
The Ukrainian women's national team secured a convincing second victory at the 2026 World Championship in Division IIB.
In a tense second-round match, the Ukrainian women’s hockey team demonstrated high scoring efficiency, defeating New Zealand 8–2.
The match began with aggressive attacks by the Ukrainian team, leading to the first goal midway through the opening period.
“In the middle of the first period, Polina Telegina opened the scoring,” noted the Ukrainian Ice Hockey Federation, describing the successful start to the game for our team.
Although the opponents briefly tied the score on a power play, the Ukrainian team immediately regained the lead.
Team captain Valeria Manchak scored immediately after the faceoff, and later Polina Telegina scored her second goal, securing a 3-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
The second period turned into a true showcase of the Ukrainian offense, with our girls scoring five unanswered goals.
“It took the Ukrainians just 24 seconds to capitalize: Polina Telegina scored her third goal,” eyewitnesses reported on the explosive start to the second period.
Over the next ten minutes, the Ukrainian women’s lead became overwhelming thanks to accurate shots by Daria Tsymirenko, Ilona Kipri, and Valeria Manchak.
By the end of the second period, the score was a lopsided 8-1, with Manchak and Telegina each scoring hat tricks in the match.
In the final twenty minutes, the coaching staff rotated the goalies, sending Anna Kharkivska onto the ice in place of Yuliana Vilgan.
This period proceeded at a more relaxed pace, and the New Zealanders were only able to score once against the Ukrainian goal in the 53rd minute of the match.
