Girona has opened a disciplinary case against Tsygankov following a scandal involving the coach

Spain’s Girona has officially opened disciplinary proceedings against Ukrainian winger Viktor Tsygankov. The reason was an incident that occurred during the first round of the Segunda Division match against Leganés.

The conflict arose following a statement by Girona’s new head coach, Quique Álvarez

The coach claimed that he had instructed the 28-year-old Tsygankov to come on as a substitute, but the player allegedly refused to follow the order and declined to change into his uniform.

Those close to the Ukrainian player refuted this version of events. They stated that the club’s medical and coaching staff had an official report confirming the player’s injury, which prevented him from taking the field.

The situation subsequently took a new turn. Tsygankov posted a screenshot on social media of an internal club message asking players to coordinate any comments with the media.

Girona believes that the publication of internal information may violate the player’s contractual obligations and the club’s internal rules.

The club stated that it will take appropriate measures to protect its interests.

At the same time, no specific punishment for the Ukrainian player has been announced yet. Possible disciplinary measures in such situations may include:

  • a monetary fine;
  • temporary suspension from training with the first team;
  • exclusion from the roster for specific matches.

However, the final decision will be made after the disciplinary proceedings are concluded.

The conflict with the club arose amid uncertainty regarding the Ukrainian soccer player’s future.

Tsygankov had previously expressed a desire to leave Girona, which was relegated from La Liga to the second division at the end of last season.

The Catalan club was also open to considering offers for the player. According to Spanish media reports, Girona valued Tsygankov’s transfer at approximately 10 million euros.

However, no offers that would satisfy the club have been received so far.

Tsygankov’s contract with Girona runs through the end of the 2026/27 season. If the player does not extend his contract and is not sold earlier, he will be able to leave the Catalan club as a free agent next summer.

This was reported by the Catalan club’s press office.

Viktor Tsygankov found himself in the spotlight after Girona’s first match in La Segunda of the 2026/27 season. The Ukrainian was named to the roster for the game against Leganés, but, according to the head coach, refused to take the field after being called as a substitute. The head coach stated that he could not recall such behavior from a professional soccer player.
