According to TechCrunch, the free AI model Ox Alpha became available on the OpenRouter platform on Thursday. It was described as a reasoning model designed for programming, long-running agent work, and production workloads. The identity of the model's creator has not been publicly disclosed.
Anonymous provider
On OpenRouter, Ox Alpha's model card labels it as a stealth model. It also states that it was developed and operated by a third-party provider that chose to remain anonymous during the preview period.

Theories about its origin
The model's appearance sparked speculation about its origin, much of it focused on China. AI analyst Andrew Curran wrote that the discussion initially centered on the GLM models of the Chinese company Z.ai. However, he said that participants in the discussion later became less confident in their conclusions.
Wccftech initially suggested that the available signs pointed to GLM, but after updating its article, it said that Ox Alpha could be an unreleased version of Microsoft's MAI model. Opposing assumptions also appeared on Reddit: one post denied that the model had a Chinese origin, while another expressed high confidence that it was Chinese.
