AI specialist Rohit Prasad appointed head of Boston Dynamics — Korea Herald

In the United States, robotics company Boston Dynamics, owned by Hyundai Motor Group, has appointed Rohit Prasad as its new chief executive officer. He officially assumed the position on Wednesday. The company seeks to accelerate the commercialization of robots with artificial intelligence, Korea Herald reports.

Experience at Amazon

Before joining Boston Dynamics, Prasad worked at Amazon for 12 years. There, he was senior vice president and chief scientist for Alexa and the artificial general intelligence (AGI) division. He participated in the development of Alexa from its early stage into a service used by hundreds of millions of households worldwide.

More recently, Prasad also led the development of Amazon Nova, a family of foundation models for enterprise use. Earlier, he worked for nearly 14 years at Raytheon BBN Technologies, where he led machine-learning research and worked on implementing technologies in projects for the U.S. government and commercial entities.

Commercialization of robots

Boston Dynamics develops the humanoid robot Atlas, the quadruped robot Spot, and the Stretch robot for warehouse automation. The company is preparing to move from experimental trials of humanoid robots to their large-scale use in industry.

In his new role, Prasad will focus on commercializing intelligent robotic systems. The company plans to focus on improving safety, productivity, and operational efficiency in industrial and commercial environments. His appointment is expected to strengthen the development of so-called physical AI — the combination of advanced artificial intelligence and robotics that enables machines to operate more autonomously and adapt to real-world conditions.

Prasad is also expected to join Boston Dynamics' board of directors after receiving the necessary regulatory and other approvals.
