Canadian scientist Bengio warns of AI threats — Anadolu Agency

In Canada, scientist Yoshua Bengio, founder and scientific director of the Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms, said that artificial intelligence systems pose real threats in the absence of safeguards. He told Canadian television channel CTV News, Anadolu Agency reports.

Yoshua Bengio’s statement

According to Bengio, the world is beginning to recognize risks that previously seemed like science fiction. He said that events this summer demonstrated the emergence of AI systems capable of having their own goals that conflict with the intentions of companies and developers. The scientist also claims that such systems may go beyond the restrictions set for them.

Earlier this year, some artificial intelligence specialists expressed concern over cases in which certain AI agents, they claimed, got out of control, bypassed restrictions and deliberately misled people.

Development of safeguards

On Friday, more than 100 people, including specialists with deep knowledge in AI, signed a letter calling on companies to build assessment tools into software to monitor potentially uncontrollable systems.

Bengio’s nonprofit project LawZero is working on a program intended to restrain uncontrolled technologies. Canada and Germany are providing 300 million Canadian dollars, or about 214 million US dollars, for the project. Bengio stressed that although the risk is real, there is still time to create protective mechanisms.
