Meta unveils VR glasses with IMAX Enhanced support — TechCrunch

Meta unveiled Meta VR Glasses, a new virtual reality device primarily aimed at viewing entertainment content, at its Connect conference. As TechCrunch reports, the company plans to begin selling the device next spring at a starting price of $1,299.99.

Lighter body and separate module

Meta said the new glasses are five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3 headset and look more like regular glasses than the company’s previous bulky VR devices. The body is made of a magnesium alloy, while the device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite processor.

The device uses a separate computing module that also serves as a battery. Meta suggests that users will be able to carry this module in a pocket, which should make it possible to use the glasses outside the home.

Display for films and 3D content

The glasses feature built-in micro-OLED panels. Meta claims a 5K Infinite Display with a density of 37 pixels per degree, as well as support for Dolby Vision and the Dolby Atmos audio format. Users will be able to download and watch films.

The company also calls the device the first VR device with IMAX Enhanced certification. According to Meta, the glasses will allow users to watch films shot for IMAX in the expanded aspect ratio characteristic of this format.

Disney+ and voice control

Meta announced a partnership with Disney: in November, Disney+ users will be able to watch selected films, including some Marvel titles, in 3D. The company also promises modes in which the user’s physical space will be integrated into viewing through virtual environments, dynamic effects, 3D imagery and spatial audio.

Meta AI assistant will be integrated into Meta VR Glasses. Commands can be given by voice or hand gestures, including starting a film with a voice request.
