Anthropic's AI model provided an answer that would compel Putin to stop the war in Ukraine

The Claude model responded to a query from a Ukrainian user asking whether Ukraine’s concessions could force Russia to end the war and ensure not just a temporary ceasefire, but a lasting peace.

In her response, the model stated that concessions might bring a pause, but do not in and of themselves guarantee an end to the war. In her view, if the aggressor’s goals extend beyond the capture of specific territories, concessions may be perceived not as a compromise but as a sign of weakness.

Claude cited the example of the 1938 Munich Agreement, noting that concessions made to Germany did not ensure lasting peace. At the same time, the model emphasized that historical analogies should not be taken as a direct prediction of how the current war will unfold.

According to the AI, lasting peace is possible when continuing the aggression becomes impossible or too costly for Russia. Among the deterrent factors, the model cited military support for Ukraine, security guarantees, alliances, and the economic cost of continuing the war.

At the same time, the response notes that fundamental changes could also occur within Russia itself—if society loses the desire to support imperialist policies or if the state loses the ability to implement them.

The model’s main conclusion is that the question of lasting peace for Ukraine lies not only in how much territory can be ceded, but in how to make Ukraine a state that an adversary would clearly find it unprofitable to attack.

At the same time, Claude separately emphasized the limitations of her own advice, noting that AI cannot fully grasp the cost of war borne by the people of Ukraine.
